Baird notes that building suggest date at end of 1860s, paper woven over sized and apparently intended for us as letter sheet - one of the last issued. Baird No. 232. 1850s H.B. Cal. Union Town Humboldt Bay canceled cover to Roxbury Mass 10c Postal Stationery
(U18) Nesbitt buff entire. Williams (HUM-4880) mostly clear cancel. The Union Town post office opened in 1852 and was the original name of Arcata (the permanent name change to Arcata occurred in 1860). Union Town was created as a port, and re-provisioning center for the gold mines in the Klamath, Trinity, and Salmon mountains to the east, and was very briefly the county seat during this period.
