Vasquez (1835-1875) was born in Monterey, California. Educated and though from a respectable family, he turned to a life of crime at an early age. Beginning with a suspected murder in 1852, he terrorized Californians for the next 23 years, committing crimes ranging from stage robbery to rustling. He was twice captured and convicted, spending time in San Quentin Prison, only to resume his life of crime upon his release. After a series of spectacular stage holdups, Vasquez was captured for the last time on May 14, 1874. Wounded six times, he was taken first to Los Angeles, then to San Francisco, and finally Salinas. He was tried at San Jose, and hanged in March 1875.
