Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Big Tree Grove Commission. -Some History- 1865 Olmsted report on management of Yosemite. Olmsteds report emphasized the importance of contact with wilderness and the responsibility of democratic governments to preserve natural beauty. His report also included suggestions for managing the park while minimizing harm to the environment. In 1866 the California legislation passed legislation to establish the commission. The commission was the first to protect the area and hire a park ranger.
